what is a "sweet frond"?
You may have found yourself wondering, "what is a sweet frond"? If this is the case, you're not alone.
A frond is the leaflike part of certain plants. Ferns have them, so do palm trees. Dill leaves are also commonly referred to as "fronds". But here, we're referring to fennel fronds. Fennel has a licoricey-sweet and refreshing flavor. Hence the name, "sweet frond".
If you've never tried fennel, it's a true culinary delight! You can slice it raw into salads, pair it with meats, substitute it for celery in soups, use it in desserts, or braise it all by its lonesome. The fronds can be dried and used in vinaigrettes or mixed into herb blends.
Let's make one thing clear, we don't only grow fennel on Sweet Frond Farm. Rather, the farm was named after the vegetable because it's the quintessence of why we love vegetables - delicious flavor, medicinal properties, culinary versatility, and the entire plant is edible!
If you happen to stumble upon it at a restaurant, farmer's market or grocery store, we'd encourage you to give it a try.
with love,
Sweet Frond Farm
